Prevalence and associated factors of macrovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes at Thawung hospital, Lopburi province

Over the last several decades, the global incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have increased significantly, including in Thailand. Macrovascular complication is the first ranked among the most common causes of death in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with complications. The information on the prevalence of macrovascular complications among patients with T2D in Thailand is lacking, especially in a community hospitals. We aim to determine the prevalence and associated factors of macrovascular complications among patients with T2D in Thawung hospital, Thawung district, Lopburi province, Thailand. A Cross-sectional study was conducted in Thawung hospital, Lopburi province. The data of T2D patients between 2016 and 2020 were retrieved from the electronic medical records after permitting the hospital. Macrovascular complications, including coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, were defined by ICD-10. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze demographic data and prevalence. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with macrovascular complications. There were 3,148 patients with T2D who participated in the study. The prevalence of macrovascular complications among T2D was 11.1%. After adjusting for confounders, the factors associated with macrovascular complications were higher age (Adjusted odds ratio=1.03; p-value < 0.001), HbA1C(Adjusted odds ratio=1.38; p-value=0.007), and low-density lipoprotein levels (LDL) (Adjusted odds ratio=1.45; p-value=0.026).
